Questions, answered

How old do you have to be?

Kids' classes are for ages 5 to 12, teen classes are for 13 to 17, and adult classes are for 18 and up. Sixteen and seventeen-year-olds can ask us which class fits.

What do I wear to my first class?

A plain t-shirt or rash guard and shorts without pockets or zippers. We can lend you a gi for the first class. Tie hair back, remove jewelry, and keep nails short.

Can I watch a class first?

Yes. Sit on the viewing bench and watch as long as you like. Ask at the front desk and we'll point out which class fits you.

What happens in a class?

A bow, a warm-up, one technique shown by the coach, drilling with a partner, and live rounds at your pace. We close with a bow.

What do Gi and No-Gi mean?

Gi classes are in a kimono-style uniform, and you can grip the fabric. No-Gi classes are in shorts and a rash guard, so grips change. Most students try both.

What is tapping?

Tapping is how you tell your partner to let go. When you tap, they stop right away. Everyone taps, from the first day to the black belts.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

No. You get fitter by training, and we show you how to work at your own level. Tell your coach about anything you want to go easy on.

How do belts work?

Your coach promotes you when they see the skills; there is no date attached to a belt. The belts page lists what each belt works on.

How does tuition work, and how do I cancel?

Your plan depends on who is training and how many classes a week. Cancel in writing with 30 days' notice; the month in progress is billed, and we can pause a membership for travel or injury. The details are on the membership page.

Do I have to compete?

No. Competing is optional. If you want to, your coach will tell you what is coming up and how to prepare.
